About Us

Our Mission

The Society for the Social Science Study of China’s mission is to cultivate a collaborative and inclusive community of scholars dedicated to advancing the creation and dissemination of academic knowledge about China.

The Society connects social scientists across disciplines and generations, fosters research and methodological exchange, and enhances scholarly collaboration within the China studies community and beyond.

Our History

The Society for the Social Science Study of Contemporary China (SSSSOC) traces its origins to the Getting China Right (GCR) initiative, a project launched in 2017 with generous support from the Luce Foundation.

GCR was created in response to the downturn in U.S.–China relations and the increasingly challenging climate for social science research in China. It provided a vital venue for scholars to build community and share resources and best practices to mitigate them.

From 2017 to 2022, GCR hosted four conferences at Harvard, Stanford, Duke, and the University of Michigan. To ensure the network's growth, the initiative was formalized through the creation of SSSSOC.

Our goal is to institutionalize this growing professional group. We are committed to creating a more inclusive organization that welcomes scholars from diverse disciplines.

Funding

The work of the Society for the Social Science Study of China (SSSSOC) is made possible through the generous support of the Henry Luce Foundation.

We are proud to continue a successful partnership with the Foundation, which previously funded SSSSOC’s predecessor, the Getting China Right (GCR) initiative.
